Though we may be better known for our signwriting brushes – the 2112 sable chisels have been a staple of the trade since the 1950s – brushmaking has always taken us into some unexpected places, and one of the most interesting is the world of professional make-up artistry.
For many years these brushes were made exclusively for the in-house make-up artists at the BBC – a relationship we’re proud to have had, and one that shaped the exacting standards they have always been made to.
We offer two ranges: the Sable Domed Make Up Brush and the Pure Sable Flat Make Up Brush. Like all Handover brushes, they are handmade by our small, highly skilled team – a craft that began in London and has been carried on in Welwyn Garden City since we merged with Edward Mason Ltd. in the early 2000s. Pure sable set in seamless nickel-plated flat ferrules on black polished handles.
The Sable Domed Make Up Brush
The domed head is the defining feature of this range – a shape designed specifically for the controlled, precise application that professional make-up work requires. The natural sable gives excellent response and holds its shape beautifully through repeated use, making these brushes ideal for broader application where a gentle, even touch is needed. Available in ten sizes from 1/8 inch to 1 inch, there is a brush for every requirement.
The Pure Sable Flat Make Up Brush
Where the domed range excels at broader work, the flat range is all about precision. The chisel edge gives a clean, accurate line that a round or domed brush can’t match – ideal for detailed work around the eyes, defined edges, and any application where accuracy matters. The finest quality sable provides exactly the spring and response that demanding, detailed work requires. Available in seven widths from 2mm to 16mm.
Between the two ranges there is a Handover sable make-up brush for every professional application – and the same care and craftsmanship goes into every single one.

Yes – they were originally made for BBC make-up artists, and the same specification is still used today, so they’re built to professional standards for theatre, film, and TV work.
The Domed range gives a soft, even touch for broader application, while the Flat range has a chisel edge for precise, detailed work such as eye make-up and sharp edges.
The Sable Domed Make Up Brush comes in ten sizes from 1/8 inch to 1 inch. The Pure Sable Flat Make Up Brush comes in seven widths from 2mm to 16mm.
Pure sable hair, set in seamless nickel-plated flat ferrules on black polished handles, chosen for its natural spring and ability to hold its shape through repeated use.
Use a gentle brush cleanser or mild soap with lukewarm water, reshape the head while damp, and dry flat or hanging head-down. Avoid soaking the ferrule, as this can loosen the glue holding the hair in place.
