INFORMATION
Also known as ‘Tripoli’, Rottenstone is a powdered rock which is used by artists, furniture restorers and metalworkers as a fine abrasive. It is usually applied with a felt or cloth pad which has been dipped in oil; if this is rubbed over the surface of the wood, it will impart a high-gloss sheen to varnish, shellac or lacquer finishes. Metalworkers also use Rottenstone to polish low-lustre metals such as pewter, or to remove tarnish.
